Where Are the Tulip Fields Near Me?

Amsterdam, the city of tulips, is surrounded by some of the most iconic tulip fields in the Netherlands. Wondering where to visit the most beautiful tulip fields? Here are the 5 best locations close to Amsterdam and how you can visit these amazing flower fields.

1. Lisse – The Flower Bulb Region

The most popular location is Lisse, the flower bulb region, home to the largest tulip park in the Netherlands, the Keukenhof. You can visit this area easily by train from Amsterdam, as it’s the most convenient option for visitors from all directions.

  • Station Hillegom: 30 km from Amsterdam, approximately 30 minutes by train.
  • Station Sassenheim: 33 km from Amsterdam, 35 minutes by train.

From both stations, take bus line 50 or 361 for a 15-minute ride to Lisse, placing you right in the heart of the tulip region.

Use the 9292 app to plan your best route.

2. North Holland – The Tulip Coast

North Holland is home to some of the most beautiful villages in the largest tulip-growing region along the coast. This area is a true hidden gem, offering incredible views of tulip fields from the dunes that stretch right up to the sea.

Towns such as Breezand, Anna Paulowna, and Den Helder are home to the most tulip fields in the Netherlands, with several companies based here. You can reach this area by train via Alkmaar, Schagen, and Den Helder.

  • Tulip Tours Holland: We visit this area to see the earliest blooming fields, a non-touristy destination that is often a little too far from city life, but can be easily reached by car or through tours.
  • You can also take a bike tour through this area.
  • Station Schagen: From here, you can explore the tulip fields. It’s a 45-minute ride from Amsterdam.

3. West Friesland – The Cultural Heart of the Netherlands

This is the cultural heart of the Netherlands, with tulip fields nestled between stunning farmlands, cows, and historical farms. Located in picturesque villages like Twisk and Schellinkhout, this area is rich in history and beauty.

We always visit this region with our Tulip Tours. We stop for lunch in one of the oldest villages along the Ijsselmeer: Onderdijk, where our guides share the rich history of the area. The towns here, including Hoorn, Medemblik, and Enkhuizen, are some of the oldest in the Netherlands and can be visited with a historical steam train from the 19th century. In April, the steam train travels past beautiful flower fields.

  • Tulip Tours Holland: We visit this area during the Tulip Tour from April 18th to May 10th.
  • Station Hoorn: It’s a 45-minute train ride from Amsterdam. From there, you can take the bus to nearby villages like Hauwert, Midwoud, and Wijdeens to explore the fields.

4. De Beemster and Schermer

This area is the closest to Amsterdam, just a 15-minute drive from the city center, where you’ll see the first tulip fields. This area holds significant historical value, as it was created in the 17th century through the draining of land and the construction of windmills. Today, the area is protected by the dikes and still hosts 13 working windmills.

  • Tulip Tours Holland: We visit these historic windmills and blooming tulip fields with our Early Flower Tour and Tulip Tour. In just 15 minutes, you’ll see the first blooming tulip fields, and 10 minutes later, you’ll be on top of a windmill, seeing how people live in this picturesque area. On windy days, you’ll even see the windmills in action!
  • This area is only accessible by bus. You can visit Middenbeemster, Schermer, or Ursem using the 9292 app. Or, join our Tulip Tour for a hassle-free experience. Tulip & Windmill

For the past 20 years, Flevoland has been known as the largest tulip-growing region in the world. Since its reclamation in 1957, this area has become home to vast tulip fields. In addition to its agricultural production of potatoes, onions, and grains, tulips have become a major crop in this region, covering over 4,000 hectares.

  • Tulip Route: This route is perfect for those who want to drive through the fields. It's also a great option for larger groups, although you generally cannot walk through the fields. The area is vast, with many windmills and modern farms, offering a more industrial landscape.
