March 2018 was a milestone for me. With a newly purchased van for transporting passengers, I started picking up tourists for my first-ever tour of the tulip fields. Giethoorn
Welcome to Giethoorn, the most beautiful fairy tale village in the Netherlands, often referred to as the "Dutch Venice." This unique destination, nestled in the northeastern part of the country, approximately 85 minutes from Amsterdam, offers a serene escape from the bustling city life. Known for its lack of conventional roads, Giethoorn is a place where locals and visitors alike navigate by sailing, walking, or cycling.

Tours
The tulip, we can't get enough of it, and many tourists with us. Every year thousands of people travel to the West of our country to see this beauty. One day can be a bit short for a visit, especially when you want to experience all the Dutch highlights. Think of a visit to the Zaanse Schans, the North Sea, the dunes and of course the most beautiful bulb fields.
Tulips
Why are tulips topped? The flowers are not actually important to growers. All they are interested in are the bulbs. The thicker the tulip bulb, the more money it raises. That is why blooming tulips are topped.
Tulips
What is a tulip? The most famous flower in the Netherlands is the tulip. The word tulip derives from the Latin word ‘Tulipa’ and means: the flower that resembles a turban. Tulips were cultivated in the Middle Ages and traded in Turkey. Men wore turbans during the cultivation process, hence the name ‘Tulip’.

Do you want a stunning garden with tulips when spring arrives? Then you have to plant them well in advance. But how and when should you plant tulip bulbs? It is actually very easy because all flower bulbs are planted in the same way.
Tulip Tours Holland - the Noord-Holland-based company that organises inspirational tulip tours - now also offers private tours. These tours will specifically appeal to smaller (private or professional) groups that want a different kind of day out.
The stunning Milkshake tulip is long, but has a full body. The tulip catches the eye because of its egg-shaped flower, which sets it apart from most other tulips. Its size makes it less vulnerable than other types of tulips.
The primary goal of these tulip fields isn't to sell the flowers; it's to cultivate new bulbs. The flowers you see in the fields are allowed to bloom only to ensure the health and maturity of the bulbs they produce. Once the tulips are fully grown, the flowers are cut off.
Tulips
Tulips belong to the group of autumn bulbs. This means that these bulbs will be planted in fall: October and November. The tulips bloom in the early spring. The earlier the tulip grower plants the bulbs, the faster the tulip bulbs will develop into "sprouts". The soil is still fairly warm in the fall. When planted early, the bulbs will be more resistant to the coming period with frost. If the frost is already in the ground, or the soil is still very wet, it is wise not to plant tulip bulbs, chances are that the bulbs will not survive and rot.

Of course it is mother nature that will eventually work here, but this does not happen automatically. To put the tulip in the spotlight every year, literally in our case, a lot of work is required. In the coming few days the hyacinths, crocuses and daffodils are starting to bloom, you can admire beautiful yellow and blue color fields in the coming week.
