The Netherlands Blooms in Spring 2026
From the end of March, the biggest tulip festival of 2026 begins again, marking the start of the spring season. Every year, millions of flowers bloom across the Dutch landscape, creating a colorful panorama visible even as you arrive at the airportâa rainbow of colors stretching across the fields. Be sure to check the schedule of events to plan your visit around the best activities and displays.
Would you like to experience this spectacular display in a fun and comprehensive way? We'll explain how to make the most of your day, weekend, or even a whole week with the best tours and events organized during this festival. In addition to the Netherlands, tulip festivals in 2026 will also take place in Michigan, Oregon, and Washington.
When to Visit: Timing Your Trip Perfectly
Early Spring Flowers (Late March)
Planning a trip to Holland soon? It's good to know that spring typically begins around the end of March. During this time, you can already enjoy fields of daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.
Tulip Bloom Season (Mid-April to Early May)
If you specifically want to see tulip fields in bloom, plan your visit from April 13 onwardânot before! Why? The blooming period depends entirely on nature. In a warm spring with early flowering, tulips may bloom as early as April 5, but in a late flowering season, the first tulips appear around April 13. For tulip enthusiasts, we recommend visiting from April 13 to be safe.
Most tulip fields across the Netherlands bloom in April. Early tulip varieties bloom from April 12-25, 2026, while late varieties bloom from April 20 to May 10, 2026.
Local Tip: King Willem Alexander's birthday on April 27 is widely celebrated throughout Holland, and this date typically coincides with the peak blooming period when the country is in full bloom!

Weekend vs. Weekday Visits: Best Time and Timeslot
The best tip is to arrive early at Keukenhofâthis is highly recommended. Take the first bus and arrive right when the park opens. You'll be among the first visitors, which feels like a dream for many: the tulips almost seem to speak to you, and you can fully enjoy the calm and the stunning colors. Book your tour from Amsterdam by bus for 8:00 AM.
During the spring season, both weekdays and weekends are usually busy. However, Mondays and Fridays are generally "transition days" and can feel a bit quieter. At certain times of the day, the roads and fields may be less crowded, giving you a more relaxed experience.
Sunset in the Tulip Fields
Did you know that each spring, there are usually around 5 to 10 stunning sunsets perfect for photography? Of course, the chance is smaller if you're only spending a couple of nights in the Netherlands, but it's definitely worth trying. The Tulip Barn experience often keeps their fields open in the evenings, allowing you to enjoy the tulip fields at sunsetâa beautiful and unique experience. Be sure to check their opening hours before planning your visit.

The Rich History of Dutch Tulips
Tulip Mania: The First Dutch Speculation Crisis
Tulip mania was the first speculative bubble in Dutch history. Between 1634 and February 1637, tulip bulbs reached extraordinary pricesâuntil demand suddenly collapsed, leaving many speculators with huge losses. Despite this, tulips remained popular, and cultivation stayed profitable. Over time, the tulip became a symbol of the Netherlands. The phenomenon is also known by various names, including tulip craze, tulip fever, and bulb madness. Many accounts exaggerated the crisis with sensational stories of astronomical prices and massive bankruptcies.
Origins and Carolus Clusius
Tulips were first cultivated in Persia (modern-day Iran) around the 10th century. By the 16th century, they had become highly prized in the Ottoman Empire. Around 1554, the Flemish diplomat Ogier Gisleen van Busbeke sent tulip bulbs from Istanbul to Vienna. The first tulips in the Dutch Republic were introduced by Carolus Clusius, a physician and botanist in Leiden, who received tulip seeds from van Busbeke shortly before the diplomat's death in 1591. Clusius played a key role in spreading tulips across Europe.
The Tulip's Journey to Europe
The tulip might have remained an imperial treasure had it not been for Carolus Clusius, who introduced the first tulip bulbs to the Netherlands in 1593. His love for tulips was unwaveringâso much so that he refused to sell his prized collection, his garden was raided by tulip enthusiasts eager to steal the bulbs, and this theft marked the beginning of tulip cultivation in the Netherlands.
Tulip Craze in the Netherlands
The tulip's beauty and simple form captured the imagination in the Low Countries, quickly becoming beloved. Clusius planted them in the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, where their popularity reportedly led to thefts of the bulbs. Soon, tulips appeared in private Dutch gardens. The first professional growers settled south of Haarlem and around Alkmaar and Hoorn, supplying wealthy city dwellers who adorned their canal houses and estates with tulip bulbs.
Rising prices attracted more outsiders to the trade. Tulip devotion was so strong that Amsterdam physician and mayor Claes Pieterszoon, known today as Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, adopted the tulip into his name and coat of arms. He also used tulip motifs on the sign outside his house on the Keizersgracht, reflecting the cultural significance of this iconic flower in Dutch society.
